Last Post

Some of you may be saddened to hear, others may not care, but this is J.D Vega's last post. I have quit Blogging to follow a career in real journalism...no offence to all you bloggers.

So as my final words of advice on this short road we call life...switch off the computer, go outside, see the world before we kill it. But most importantly, in the immortal words of Jerry Springer...take care of yourselves, and each other.

Wanted!!

"This is a unanimous decision by all imams that whoever insults the prophet deserves to be killed, and whoever will take this insulting man to his end will get this prize..."

This was said by prayer leader Mohammed Yousef Qureshi who has offered a bounty of $21,000 and a new car as a reward for the head of the now infamous Danish cartoonist who drew the 'Mohammed cartoon'.

Of course the most important question to ask in light of these events is.....

......is there any event Ford won't sponsor? :-)

Mary McAleese misrepresents the views of the Irish people...yet again.

While on a visit to the most oil rich nation in the world, Saudi Arabia, Irish President Mary McAleese (who ran unchallenged in the last election) has publicly apologized for the 'Mohammed Cartoons' printed in newspapers across Europe.

What are you at Mary???

I think our 'leader' would soon find that the vast majority of the voting public to be in support of freedom of speech, especially if it meant bowing down before the middle east....

I don't know about you, but I'll be thinking very carefully next time I go to the polls to vote for a figure head....

Friendly Fire

It appears Friendly Fire isn't just the preserve of U.S troops in the Gulf...

Dick Cheney has shot and wounded a fellow hunter while on a Quail shooting expedition...(the bird, not Dan Quail, or so the press release goes..)

Now...all we have to do is convince George 'Dubya' to go hunting with Dick Cheney...

'War on Terror'

The 'Library tower' story got me thinking about the past few years' events, mostly the response to 9/11, the Madrid train bomb and the London tube bombings....

The U.S and it's allies have been waging a 'war on terror'...As the press release goes. The main events nofthis war have been the war in Iraq (resulting in the deaths of 2,000 U.S soldiers and over 1 million dead Iraqi civilians), the invasion of Afghanistan, and countless rights abuses, both on the privacy of the allied nations' citizens and of course; the abuse of prisoners....

Now, bear with me for a moment, but to declare war on a state of mind seems like a bit of an uphill struggle. Unlike the 'War on Drugs' or declaring war on a particular country, where there is a tangible target...You can show a picture of your enemy on the news and say 'We must defeat this enemy', there is no defense against terrorism, there is no way to hunt it down and kill it(no matter how many Afghan caves you look in). But when everyone on the planet, whatever their religion or political views, is a potential terrorist, there is very little you can do. Every time you kill a terrorist, every time you bomb a village on the off chance a terrorist leader might be there and end up killing innocent people...All your doing is poking a sleeping bear with a stick..You're creating more terrorists.

Che, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter...

Because of technology such as the internet and mobile phones, we live in a wold where anyone, anywhere has access to bomb making instructions, terrorist propaganda and emotive rhetoric straight from the mouths of men they've come to see as freedom fighters....The bear grows stronger every day.

But of course the Bush administration will never give up the 'war on terror'. America must be in a constant state of war, the citizens must be kept in a constant state of fear, afraid of a non-existent, invisible enemy. How else can a government jusify spending so much money on the 'tools of war', but of course, there's no need to keep receipts, I'm sure the money is going where they say it is...

I come from a country with a history of terrorism, where normal, rational and intelligent people felt that the only viable way to achieve their aims was through violence towards civilians. Some of our national heroes, and enen former presidents were at one time or another thought of as terrorists. The winners may write the history books, but if we're not careful, history may see the West as the enemy because of the way we choose to fight terror....

Abu Hamza

As the overwhelming stench of burning Dutch flags wafts in from the East, European newspapers continue to publish 'hilarious' and 'well drawn' cartoons of the prophet Mohammed under the banner of free speech...
Meanwhile, Abu Hamza (pictured left) has been sentenced to seven years in prison for 'incitement to murder' because of public speeches he made encouraging Islamic Jihad...

Free speech indeed...

(Before you ask, he lost an eye and both forearms in a 'de-mining accident'...What a fucking humanitarian)

Crisis averted...Or so we're led to believe.....

Yeah, yeah, yet another second rate journalist using September eleventh to SEX things up a bit...
But as I was walking through an electronics store yesterday, I noticed a large group of people standing in front of the myriad of massive televions, chattering wildly amongst themselves I knew something was up, as I grew closer I could see that they were watching Sky news with the image of a burning skyscraper...'Ahhh shit...' I thought, ...'What have those reactionary mofos done now?' But as I grew closer, I saw that they were only showing the stock footage of the twin towers attack, what they were actually reporting was the fact the Team America, world police (fuck yeah!!) had foiled a plan to attack the Liberty tower, sorry...I meant Library tower, man, those words are really similar, the only difference is that the first one is totally inaccurate, but handily enough, very emotive when addressing a crowd of like minded, patriotic zombies...

What I found to be the strangest aspect of this story was the fact that.....THIS HAPPENED NEARLY FOUR YEARS AGO, yet this evidence is only coming out now.....Wow.

Handily enough, this should bolster pulbic opinion towards the War on Terror....Especially handy since this is the same week that 'Dubya' cuts the healthcare budget to help pay for the war in Iraq, which has cost over $440 Billion Dollars to date....How many white phosphorous grenades does that buy???

A handy week for the Bush administration overall I'd say.

Mohammed cartoon

Muslims have been up in arms over the past couple of weeks over these images printed in European newspapers:

As you can see, I have no problem reproducing them here, this is because, although I have nothing but the utmost respect for all religions and beliefs, there is something I hold far dearer, namely, the freedom of the press. Without the freedom to 'poke fun at' and satirize any ideology, whether political or religious, we may as well live in China or under some other oppressive regime.
Over the past few days there has been rioting, arson, kidnappings and mass protest across not only the Muslim world, but also in many European countries. This violence has been punctuate with slogans such as, 'Death to the west', 'Europe will have their 9/11' and 'Massacre those who insult Islam'. Perhaps if certain sections of Muslim society weren't so downright reactionary, we could all just get along.... This picture says it all:

The main reason, as far as I can see it, it the fact that Muslims take offence to the image of Mohammed being satirized, but as you can see in this link, this has been going on for ages...

Magic Mushrooms Banned in Ireland

The Minister for health, Mary Hearny, banned magic mushrooms last week. Up until then they were freely available in headshops, who were permitted to sell them through a legal loophole.

The catalyst for this blanket ban was no doubt an incidentwhich occurred last year where a thirty year old man took a running jump from a third floor balcony. One of his friends was quoted as saying, "We were just drinking beer and playing trivial pursuit....", it later emerged that he had consumed magic mushrooms and there was outrage on all of the countries moral compasses, namely the Joe Duffy and Gerry Ryan radio talk shows. What people fail to realize is that magic mushrooms are not party 'drugs' and it's common sense to avoid alcohol, not to mention balcony's, when having consumed them.....

It's true that I have, on occasion, had the pleasure to have taken Mexican truffles, one of the milder forms of 'magic mushrooms', with my friends. So I may be somewhat biased on these issues, but I believe the law should not have changed for these reasons:
1. This is the only recorded death due to these substances, a tradedy and all as it was, but how many deaths PER DAY can be attributed to alcohol abuse? If you go down to any Accident and Emergency room (ER) in Ireland, 75% of the cases will be alcohol related. The government can't be so lenient with one substance and yet actively encourage another...
2. If 'mushrooms' remained legal, they could be taxed just like alcohol and be good for the economy.
3. The banning, as sad and all as this may sound, leaves no avenue for the youth of Ireland, other than copious alcohol consumtion, in order for something to do, especially in (the many) rural areas where there are no facilities.
4. The banning of something which grows freely in our countryside seems to me to be utterly nonsensical....

So Mary Harney, take note....
